John Wall retired this week from Western Garages, having started there in 1973, bringing to an end a career of almost 50 years in the motor industry in Clare.
At the time, Western Garages was owned and run by his uncle, the late Brendan Wall. Ownership has since passed to his sons, Brendan and Justin, who continue to run this family business from their new showroom on Quin Road. The original Western Garages was situated at Cornmarket, in the middle of Ennis town.
John started an apprenticeship in panel beating, a skill he excelled at but after completing his apprenticeship, he moved on to widen his experience and take on more mechanical work.
For many years he supervised the preparation of all new vehicles and for the last few years he took charge of managing the used car stock and general maintenance of the building and surrounds.
John is a Ballyea native and a huge GAA supporter. He was always on hand to greet customers and was very well known to all who passed through the doors of Western Garages.
Our picture shows John (centre) receiving a presentation from Justin and Brendan Wall, who wish him all the best in his retirement.
