New car sales for June are well down on last year, with just 1,499 sold, half of the sales figure for June 2023. Despite this, year to date figures are up slightly at 1.7%.

Both vans and HGV sales figures are also down by 36% and 1.6% respectively.

Just 692 EVs were registered in June, down 52% compared to the same period last year and overall, sales of EVs this year are down by 25%, with 10,747 sales posted.

Taking the overall market, petrol cars lead the way at 33%, followed by diesel at 23%. Hybrid sales accounted for 20% with Electric at 14% and PHEVs at 9%.

Brian Cooke, SIMI Director General commented: “The decline in the new EV car market continues to highlight the need for Government to support the EV transition, with ways to incentivise the market for both private and company car buyers. Extending consumer incentives and Benefit-in-Kind support, along with investment in charging infrastructure will build consumer and business confidence and encourage uptake. Retailers remain optimistic as we enter the 242-registration plate sales period, and with new models coming to the market along with variety of attractive offers are positive that this will help to boost sales activity in July, the second busiest month for new car sales.”
