It’s definitely awards season, following on from the Irish Car of the Year event. The latest is the Women’s World Car of the Year, whose jury have just released details of their six category winners.
The overall winning car will be announced on March 8, which is International Women’s Day.
Judging is based on safety, driving, comfort, technology, design, efficiency, impact on the environment and value for money.
As such, the cars are not being judged as being suitable for women, they’re judged on their own merits by the normal criteria that anyone would use when buying a car.
Now in its 12th year, the awards bring together a jury of 56 motoring journalists from 40 countries, including Geraldine Herbert from Ireland. It is the only automotive jury composed entirely of women.
In the first round of voting, 65 cars were in the running, all launched between January 1 and December 31, 2021. Even with the pandemic, judges made a special effort to drive every car and choose the six category winners which have now been announced.
It’s interesting to note that of the six, three are electric cars, demonstrating the progress being made in this sector of the market.
