The AA have announced a new partnership with a Cork-based smart charging company, Ohme, who are now their official EV charging partner for their EV Insurance customers.

Members will get discounted EV chargers as part of the programme to encourage more drivers to switch to electric. The AA also offers EV specific insurance policies and are currently offering three months of free EV insurance, with some policies offering home charger cover as standard.

“We are delighted to announce that we will be partnering with Ohme as our official home charger supplier,” said Tom McIlduff, CEO at AA Ireland. “Ohme’s award-winning ePod and Home Pro chargers and reputation for excellent customer service meant it was the obvious choice for The AA and a great way to collaborate with a fast-expanding Irish business.”

“Our partnership with the AA underlines Ohme’s position as one of Ireland’s fastest growing smart charging companies,” said David Watson, CEO at Ohme. “The AA is a trusted, household brand in Ireland and Ohme has just been named as the Best EV Chargepoint Manufacturer in the recent Irish EV awards, so this is a perfect partnership, bringing the benefits of off-peak charging with reduced running costs to EV drivers in Ireland.”

The starting price for an Ohme charger is €1,099 and can automatically take advantage of off-peak tariffs. An off peak full charge of a Volkswagen ID.3 for instance could cost as little as €7.34, based on SSE Airtricity’s Night Boost tariff, which is currently 9.53c/kWh. Bear in mind though that you only get that low price from 2am to 5am, so you’ll only be able to put around 20kW into the car at that price per day.

With these chargers, you also have the option to charge the car when renewable energy production is at its highest.

Ohme are also the official EV charger provider for Mercedes-Benz, Polestar, Volkswagen and Volvo in Ireland.
