Opel has again raided the back catalogue to name its new SUV, reviving the Frontera name, a full-size jeep from the 90s.

This time around, diesel is ditched and the choices are full electric or 48 volt hybrid powertrains for the family-aimed SUV. It should arrive on Irish shores later this year.

Opel CEO, Florian Huettl, said: “With its combination of rugged design, spaciousness, clever solutions and efficient drivetrains, our new Opel Frontera will appeal to a wide range of customers who want to stand out from the crowd. It is ideally suited to the urban and sub-urban environment while simultaneously offering a recharging experience to our customers.”

The Frontera has an upright stance and features the new Opel Blitz logo on its black front vizor, which is integrated with the headlamps. Pronounced wheel arches and wings are meant to give the new car a solid look on the road.

Interior

Inside, wide horizontal panels are designed to visually widen the cabin and give it an airier look. A Pure Panel cockpit features two 10” displays for driver information and the infotainment systems.

There’s also an option to use your smartphone, via a dedicated app, to completely control the infotainment and this also interacts correctly with the steering wheel controls.

A cooled wireless charger and two USB ports in the front plus two more in the back look after charging needs. Tablets can be stored safely in the centre console with a flexible strap to hold them in place. Storage areas are rubber lined to prevent rattles and sliding. There are also integrated smartphone pockets in the front seat back rests to help those in the back seats.

Front seats feature Intelli-Seat, designed to relieve pressure on the tailbone, ensuring comfort even on longer journeys. The seats themselves feature contrast stitching and are available in fully-recycled materials.

The boot can take 460 litres of luggage and with the 60:40 rear seats folded down, that increases to 1,600 litres and there’s a second load floor fitted as standard. Roof rails are optional but they can take up to 200kg of weight.
