Toyota have just unveiled the fifth generation of their Prius, the pioneering hybrid car. This time around, European Prius cars will exclusively come as plug-in hybrids with increased efficiency and an EV range 50% greater than the outgoing model.
In Ireland, more than 90% of Toyota’s passenger car sales come from hybrids, Toyota having abandoned diesel engines quicker than most. Hybrids are seen as a bridge for drivers who are not ready yet for a fully electric car.
Commenting on the fifth-generation Prius, Zoe Bradley, Head of Marketing Communications and Corporate Affairs in Toyota Ireland said: “We are so excited to announce the next generation of the hybrid icon that started the world’s journey to electrified motoring – The Toyota Prius.
“Since its first mass market introduction in 1997 Toyota’s hybrid technology has continuously improved in line with our ‘Kaizen’ philosophy. This fifth-generation Prius is no exception and with a stunning design profile married with 50% longer EV capabilities, it represents yet another major positive shift change to what has come before.”
The new Prius is powered by a 2.0 litre petrol engine and a more powerful electric motor which together offer 223bhp, so performance should be strong.
Coupé inspired styling is built on Toyota’s second generation Global Architecture and weight has been reduced while rigidity has gone up. A lower centre of gravity has been achieved by resiting the batteries and petrol tank.
With an enlarged 13.6 kWh battery, mounted under the rear seat, Toyota predict that most daily driving will be undertaken in EV mode, with the engine taking over thereafter.
The wheelbase has been lengthened by 50mm and the overall height is lower by a similar amount and wheels up to 19” will be available.
We can expect the new Prius in Europe in Spring of 2023.
