According to research carried out by Continental Tyres, two thirds of Irish motorists are unaware of the EU tyre labels which give information on the performance of new tyres sold across the country.

Even though it doesn’t seem to have grabbed the general public, it’s been in place since 2012 and a new version has now been introduced giving even more relevant information.

Tom Dennigan of Continental Tyres commented “We welcome the recent introduction of the new and improved EU tyre label as any move towards providing motorists with more information on tyres is a very positive step.”

Tyre retailers, being the first port of call, should be at the forefront in making motorists aware of the label’s existence and the need to pay attention to it as it details exactly how the tyre performs against others on the market.

The survey also showed that price was the number one factor taken into account when choosing tyres, with 62% of respondents, men more than women, being most concerned by this.

At least number two and three on the list were all weather performance and grip on wet roads, showing that all is not lost. Fuel efficiency was also a factor well to the fore when it comes to choosing tyres.

The new tyre label includes details on fuel efficiency, wet braking and noise performance. Where applicable, performance on snow and ice is also rated. There’s now a QR code, leading to an EU database giving even more detail on the particular tyre and all manufacturers by law must list their products on this database.
